Nestled in the heart of the popular golf community, the Sand Valley Tennis Club stands out as an award-winning construction project in the athletic construction space. The Daily Reporter recognized the project for its cutting-edge design and innovative construction techniques. The facility encapsulates three primary components: a state-of-the-art Tennis court, thoughtfully designed locker rooms with a pro-shop, and a full-service restaurant and bar for Sand Valley residents and guests.
Architectural Innovation and Unique Construction Solutions
The Tennis Club features a unique design. The tennis court is situated over 17 feet below the first floor and reaches an impressive total height of over 33 feet. This notable feature posed significant construction challenges, particularly with the ceiling.
To address this, Scherrer employed an interior scaffolding system, establishing work platforms to facilitate the structuring and finishing of the ceilings and walls. This meticulous process involved constant movement of materials and personnel, with the confined space only allowing for one trade to operate at a time. The exceptional skill and coordination exhibited by the team ensured the successful completion of this sophisticated facility.
An additional standout aspect of this project was the utilization of advanced construction methods. The masonry subcontractor employed a robotic lift assist known as SAM for the erection of the masonry exterior walls.
Furthermore, the court walls were finished with Armourcoat, a multi-layer plaster ideal for gameplay, installed by specialized experts from England. Floor performance was also a priority, leading to specific testing on the polished concrete floor to determine the impact of varying levels of polishing on ball speed during play.
Aesthetic Features
The Sand Valley Tennis Club showcases distinctive design features, including exposed steel and wood trusses, finished wood ceilings, and plaster walls, creating a unique aesthetic for both the court and its accompanying spaces. The thoughtful layout and dimensions adhere to regulatory standards while contributing to an exceptional visual experience.
Unique Court Tennis Experience and Community Impact
As one of only 11 “Court Tennis” courts built in the USA and approximately 50 worldwide, this facility offers a rare and exceptional installation, with few direct comparisons in similar projects.
The Tennis Club serves as a vital hub for both local residents and visitors, providing a unique tennis experience. It recently hosted the 2024 US National Open in July 2024 , attracting 12 players (11 professionals and one amateur) from cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, Aiken, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.
